Bologna is a historic town and is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. Although being historic it is still a very vibrant city and can get quite busy at times. It is served by it own airport which given its smaller size is always nice to travel to and from. The airport use to be a little difficult to get into the city centre but there is now a high speed monorail connecting the airport and city centre. Getting to Bologna by train is a little more difficult as it is not on the fast AV line so you need to take a slower train or change at Reggio-Emilia. Once in the city it is easy to reach the top sites on foot. Among things to see are the Piazza Maggiore which has arched colonnades, cafes and medieval and renaissance structures including the City Hall, the Fountain of Neptune and the Basilica di San Petronio. Other things to see are the medieval towers of the the city including the Two Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda. There are plenty of fine dining options and places to take in an aperitif. The local cuisine includes lasagne Bolognese and many will want to sample spaghetti Bolognese, remember it is the famous local ragu that makes these dishes so popular and tasty.
