Reggio Emilia

Reggio Emilia may seem like an odd choice of key places to visit. We have chosen this as it is our home town when we are in Italy. It has some uniqueness about it that most people pass by when visiting Italy. It is an easily accessible city as it has one of the fast AV station unlike its neighbours of Parma and Modena. The city is one of the northern historic walled cities and its Centro Storico ‘historic centre’ is walkable, it would be very difficult to navigate around the central area another way except by bicycle and nowadays escooters. Whilst not having the attraction of some other cities there are many interesting churches to visit including the Reggio Emilia Cathedral, Basilica di San Prospero and the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Ghiara. There is also the famous Sale del Tricolore where the Italian flag was born and the building houses a museum dedicated to the Italian flag. It is a great place to sample local cuisine, take in an aperitif in the popular Piazza Fontanesi or enjoy the local gelato. So whilst not the normal tourist destination it will give you a sample of more local Italian life.
